11 Jul 10 Must-know Tips on Executive Job Search

It is normal for every person to strive for career advancement and growth. It makes them feel that all of their hard work has paid off and that a promotion is, indeed, the best reward they can get.

However, for some whose luck seems to be so illusive, they have to find their own growth somewhere else. That is why most of them opted for executive job searches, where they hope that someday they would be lucky enough to find the executive job that they have long been dreaming for.

But is it really just luck? Or are there some factors that need to be considered when searching for that executive job of their dreams?

Landing a good executive job is not dependent on luck.  For people who wish to learn some tips regarding executive job searches, here are some pointers on how to get that dream job:

1. Killer looks

The saying, “Looks could kill” is not an understatement. Though the word kill is only used literally and the word look is sometimes associated with stares. But what is being pointed out here is that looks can definitely kill a person’s chances on landing his or her executive job if the applicant had missed one great factor: appearance.

As the saying goes, first impressions last, so it would be better to make that first impression by looking just right for the job.  After all, if a person wants to have an executive job, then, he should dress appropriately for the position. In this way, the executive job he had been searching for might just become a reality.

2. Show some mastery

For an executive position, most employers would want to hire those who are already an expert in their own field. This means that the applicants should be adept in the areas concerning their chosen careers. This will show that the applicant has already started a coherent career track and is already knowledgeable in the field.

It will do no good to an applicant who claims to be a “jack of all trades but a master of none.” Six out of 10 applicants are hired because of their expertise on a certain field. This only means that employers are more concerned with people who have already mastered their career and have established continuous career growth.

Finding an available executive job could be one thing but actually getting that dream executive job is another thing.  Looking and acting the part is a must to landing that dream job!

22 Aug 09 Interview Tips to Help You Land that Job

Are you looking for a new job or a new career?  If you are, your first step should be examining job listings.  When it comes to finding job listings, you have a number of different options.  For instance, you can use your local newspaper, the internet, or career counseling centers.  In a way, finding job listings is the easy part.  Actually getting the job that you want is the hard part.

When it comes to landing a job that you applied for, your interview will play an important part in whether or not you are hired.  If you are able to get a job interview for one of the jobs that you applied for, you are advised to proceed with caution.  Your actions or your responses during an interview can either make or break you.  To increase your chances of landing your dream job, or at least the one that you applied for, you will want to continue reading on, as some helpful tips are outlined below.

When going to a job interview, it is important that you are properly dressed.  You would actually be surprised to learn how many job applicants show up to a job interview in unattractive, unprofessional attire.  Even if you are just applying for a job as a cashier at one of your local supermarkets, you are still advised to dress professionally for a job interview.  Depending on the job you are applying for, a dress or a business suit may be called for; however, a simple pair of black pants and a white shirt is much better than a pair of jeans.

You are also advised to bring a couple of copies of your resume to your job interview.  This is something that many job applicants do not think to do, but it is actually a wise move.  Yes, you may have already submitted your resume to the employer giving you the interview, but it is important to remember that they probably received hundreds, if not thousands, of resumes.  It is not unheard of for resumes to get lost or misplaced.  Bringing along an extra copy of your resume shows that you are responsible and likely to always be prepared.  In addition to brining an extra resume for the interviewer, it is also advised that you bring a copy for yourself.  This will make reviewing your work history and education easier, as everyone would be on the same page.

During the interview, you will be asked a number of different questions by the interviewer.  One of the most common questions asked is about your strengths and your weaknesses.  One of the biggest mistakes that a job applicant makes is stating that they don’t have any weaknesses.  Everyone has at least one weakness or something that they wish that they could chance about themselves.  You will want to be honest and admit this.  Of course, you don’t want to go overboard.  What you will want to do is try and make your weakness a strength as well.

At the end of most interviews, most interviewers ask the interviewee, which would be you, if you have any questions. You are advised to ask questions.  In all honesty, even if you don’t have any questions to ask, you are advised to come up with some.  Many interviewers use the “do you have any questions,” as a ploy.  Many are turned off by interviewees who do not have any questions.  Some even associated it with not be interested in the job or the company.  Even if you ask about how the company got started or what the chances are for moving up the company ladder, you are advised to ask questions.  Of course, be careful with the questions that you do ask.  You don’t want to sound too pushy or overbearing.

At the end of your interview, it is extremely important that you shake the hand of your interviewer and thank them for the opportunity.  This is very important.  It is hard for some to imagine, but a simple thank you actually goes a long way nowadays, as it is hardly spoken anymore.  It is also advised that you send a thank you note the interviewer you met with.  This may not necessarily increase your chances of landing the job, but it will make you look professional.

By keeping the above mentioned tips in mind, you should be able to have a successful interview.  As a reminder, interviews are the most important part of landing a new job.

03 Jul 09 Finding the Dream Job by Having a solid Resume

Without those interviews, you will not be getting any offers.  So in order to achieve this goal of getting a job offer, the compressed biography of your achievements must be stellar.  Keep in mind that this is a summary of your achievements, not of your life story.  Most importantly, write a well organized, concise CV.  In working towards this goal, keep in mind the goal of your resume.  This goal is to get you an interview.  Be sure that your resume stays within those boundaries and is a neat and well organized document.  In the same vein, keeping your resume neat and organized will ensure that you know the contents of your resume inside and out.  Too many college grads, especially, fill their resumes to hide any experience lacking, and upon landing an interview, hesitate when being asked specific questions about information included on the resume.  Avoid this situation by arriving at the interview fully prepared to elaborate on anything you have included in the resume.  A resume that sticks to the aim of getting an interview will be a resume that is carefully thought through and well organized, and which is focused on things relevant to your career past and career future.

Never lose sight of the objective of the resume.  The main objective is to secure an interview.  An effective resume conveys that the employer needs you.  If you manage to secure an interview, you have won half the battle.  Approach the interview as a live transmission and expansion of what has been stated in your resume.  Do not view the interview as an hour of scrutiny upon your life and experiences.  Remember, your resume was good enough to be noticed, and your life achievements created the resume; thus you deserve the job.  When composing your resume, review every point you have included, and check to see that it both states something positive about you and is said in an original way.  Use words that indicate that because of you, things happen.  Your presence was a catalyst in moving the company forward.  Don’t be shy; the resume has no place for modesty, but it also has no place for bragging.  In other words, your resume should turn heads, but never in doubt as to what have you said about yourself.

While achieving the goal of the resume - the interview, work to make an organized resume.  Organization applies to all levels of the resume:  the aesthetic format, the ordered placement of the facts, and the previous employments you choose to include.  The aesthetics should be friendly to the eye, and help to draw attention to the most important points.  Those that are most important should always be located nearer to the top.  In other words, activities and employments that are most relevant and current should be listed first.  Bullet point formats are popular for their neatness and visual aid in drawing attention where it is due.  Within each bullet point, include only the most applicable and important information that your future employer will want to know about your other jobs and activities.  Keeping these points concise and to the point is helpful, as not much time is spent on reading a resume, so paragraphs describing a job will be skipped over.  Concise points also help achieve the end of an aesthetically organized resume.

Every company wants well-organized employees, so showing off the bat that you are organized will be a benefit for you.  No matter how gifted you are, if your resume looks like a crossword puzzle in its organization and format, it will be hard for the potential employer to see your talent.  When your resume is well-written, clear, and organized, you are marketing to potential employers your writing skills along with good standards of neatness and organization.  Having made this impression on paper will smooth your sailing for an easy interview, as the employer’s opinion of you will already be positive.

Once the interview date has been set, this is a time to calm your nerves instead of working them into a frenzy.  Don’t forget that you are going on this interview because you have already impressed the employer.  Your job now is to continue the positive impression already made, and to show your character, which can’t be shown on paper.  The best way of continuing a positive impression is to be prepared to talk about yourself directly and in focus, just like your resume has.  When asked why you want to work in the specific career, don’t recount all the twists and turns in your life that have brought you to the conclusion; be to the point.  Remember that you must be able to back up and expand on anything that you have included in your resume.  Thankfully, that little piece of paper referred to as the resume has already accomplished quite a bit of work for you.  It has informed the employer who you are, and what you want in a job.  Now it is your turn to better acquaint yourself with who the employer is and what he wants in an employee.  View the interview with such an attitude:  the chance for both potential employer and employee to learn more about each other.

The resume is your formal introduction to the career world.  It discloses your talents to those who are seeking just such talents.  To this aim, it is important not to lose sight of the goal of the resume.  The resume lets the employer know who you are, why he needs you, and where he can reach you so that he can secure an interview with you.  Write your resume to reflect these goals, in a concise, organized and well-phrased document.  Use this organized and well-phrased resume to your advantage at the interview, as the document is, essentially, the first impression that you have made.  This is the manner in which you should view the preparation and presentation of your resume.  Once at the interview, put a smile on your face and pat your resume on the back for the great job both you and it have already done - your dream career is now very near!
